The TON blockchain recently experienced
disruptions due to the DOGS memecoin airdrop on Binance that started on August
25, 2024, at 23:59 UTC.
A total of 22 billion DOGS tokens,
representing 4% of the total supply, were available as rewards.
The Open Network (TON) faced a major
outage, failing to generate blocks for nearly 7 hours on August 28, 2024.
The disruption was caused by a network
overload due to a high number of DOGS transactions. Validators on the network
became overwhelmed and lost consensus.
DOGS launched
on August 26 causing surge in network activity
Validators were called upon to restart
at 4:00 UTC to restore consensus and the network is currently
back online.
The DOGS meme coin, inspired by Spotty,
a mascot promoted by Telegram founder Pavel Durov, has gained significant
attention. The official Dogs Community channel on Telegram has 16.8 million
subscribers.
On its launch day, the DOGS token
reached a $2 billion trading volume, causing a 7-hour outage on
the TON blockchain due to overwhelming transaction activity.
This event highlights challenges the
TON blockchain faces with scaling and maintaining network stability amid high
transaction volumes.
The
incident clearly shows that The Open Network (TON) urgently needs to
improve its scaling mechanism. To support the sudden increase in usage.
Especially during the launch of popular tokens that tend to attract the
attention from a lot of users.
