On April 10th, Etherscan announced that they had disabled the display of zero-value token transfers by default on their website. From now on, users will have to enable this feature manually from the website settings if they wish to see it. Etherscan stated that they implemented this update to prevent "address poisoning" attacks, which could involve phishing and spam.

“Preventing scams and attacks in a neutral and scalable way is an infinite cat-and-mouse game… please feel free to share your feedback as we continue to improve.”

"Address poisoning" is a type of crypto scam where the attacker sends tokens with a value close to zero or with no value at all to a user's wallet address in order to "poison" it. The transaction is then recorded in the wallet's transaction history. The aim of this scam is to trick users into sending coins to the fake address unintentionally. Hackers use sophisticated software to create fake wallet addresses that look similar to the user's address, such as having a few identical characters at the beginning or end.
